What is Life Coaching? How I got here!
In 2001 working as a National Consultant in Language Arts and Social Studies, I was in a mass car accident in New Mexico. I was told to go and do several presentations to several school districts highlighting the area of instruction to embrace, using the books published by HRW Publishing Company. I was very hesitant because the weather was inclement weather, advisory from the National weather bureau in New Mexico. My manager instructed me to go anyways and literally threatened my job. I loved my job, because I could reach many administrators and teachers using best practice and uses of the materials I was supporting. Unfortunately, I was in an accident on I-40 interstate going to Tucumcari, NM. I had to have eight surgeries do to one bad choice that I made by going to NM. I put my life in jeopardy. So I went through the next ten years getting surgeries, therapies, and pain management doctors. Yes, I was very frustrated and confused, as I felt vulnerable, afraid, traumatized and lost as to what I was to do with my life. I didn’t know what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and who to talk too. I knew I could not go back to work.
I spent years trying to figure out my purpose in life through the pain. I sat in my chair, prayed at my alter and I reached out to “that which is greater than I” my God. One day I decided to get on the computer and Health Coach Institute (HCI) popped up. I spoke with Stacey Morgenstern one of the developers of HCI. After speaking with her, I joined their group. I am a life learner, but this helped me to identify my Destiny in Life Coaching. The process, the activities and class support truly showed me that I can serve a purpose!
Life coaching is defined:
- Challenges you to question how you approach every aspect of your life
- A life coach is someone who unlocks potential, so you are empowered to create anything you desire.
- We define a life coach as someone who inspires you to change the way you live day to day to be more aligned with who you want to be.
Life coaching is a collaborative partnership between the coach and the client and continuously gives all the power back to the client. Our skills are about knowing the most empowered questions to ask, to bring those answers from within the client forward in service of expanding choices the client has to create what they want, in every aspect of their lives by making those choices more available. The program is based on 10 paradigms. A paradigm is simply what makes the work, work. They are not absolute trues, but they unlock thinking that expands our perspective, view, and maybe in a holistic perspective. For example, the first paradigm is to release the pressure to create change and focus on increasing choice.
