The Fourth Grade Swing Lesson

Thinking back, to the fourth grade there was a lot of negative energy around me and I was just a nice person who enjoyed life for what it was. One day has stuck with me in my memory for years now. This day takes place at Frederick Douglas Elementary School in Indiana down the street from my childhood home. I decided to go on the swing that day and just embrace the air all around me, taking in the play ground. Then all of a sudden three girls approached me, there were only two swings on the playground which was the issue. They asked me if I would get off the swing, and I nicely said no. In a second the girls threw me off the swing and beat me up. I was astonished by the situation, and a friend of mine named John had pulled the girls off of me. I was embarrassed to go home because I had scratches all over my face, and I knew I would come home to another beating, as I was not allowed to venture to the park alone in the first place. This was my first experience of physical bullying. It’s crazy to think how these memories and experiences can stick with someone as they age. Always remember you won’t necessarily be remembered, but how you treat an individual will always reminisce in one’s mind.
